Behavioral treatment of such conditions is designed to be educational, practical, brief and effective in terms of both clinical improvement and cost. Our programs involve teaching an individual how he/she can control the nervous system and change habits of reaction to stress. We also teach people with chronic conditions including pain how to maximize control and management.
Treatment modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback and relaxation training, and behavioral pain management. Other specific applications might include assertion training, anger management, mindfulness meditation, hypnosis, or psychological testing.
Biofeedback
One of our prominent modalities is biofeedback which involves computer-based technology that measures such nervous system functions as muscle tension, respiration and heart rate. Using the information the machinery provides, one can learn to modify these nervous system functions and quiet the system toward being more relaxed and regulated. That contributes to an increase in control over the stress response and a decrease in symptoms of distress.
